Torre dell'Orso - San Foca, Lecce, Salento, Apulia, South Italy

Along the coastline, in the tract bounded in the south by Otranto and in the north by the Park of Cesine, one of the finest nature reserves in Italy, there is the coastal area that comprises the coasts of Melendugno: San Foca, Roca, Torre dell'Orso; this area spreads for 12 kilometres.

San Foca was originally a little centre of fishermen, now it is a very crowded tourist centre that has undergone deep changes from the landscape point of view.

Here the beaches are sandy and well kept. At a few metres from the sea there is the characteristic Saracen tower that overlooks the little harbour full of sports boats.

Along the promenade you can still happen to meet, almost out of time, fishermen who darn their nets. Roca is a little centre full of cliffs and little coves and it's prevalently constituted by private houses.

This place is well-known for its archaeological settlements, among the most important in Puglia, that date back to Messapi (cave of the little "Poesia"). Sheer to the sea there are the ruins of the Castle that stood for the will of Walter VI of Brienne in 1353 and that became later on a heap of stones.

It's very suggestive to bathe in the archaeological area, close to the low cliffs, completely sheltered from the sirocco's wind, among the castle and the "queen's small gardens", the tower and the "Poesia".

Going on towards Otranto you can see Torre dell'Orso.

interni giardino

Up to fifty years ago it was uninhabited, then it had a very big building growth thanks to its main attraction: a beach with a very fine sand, one kilometre long, that has wonderful dunes bordered with the maquis behind and high rocks by its two sides.

Here there are two characteristic and imperious reefs rather high and very much alike, that surface from the sea, one next to the other.

They are named "the two sisters" and about them there are many legends: it's worth seeing them.

Torre dell'Orso is not only sea, it's a turist centre in perfect order with sports and local facilities of any kind for all the people who are fond of fun.

At only ten minutes by car there is Otranto.

How to reach TORRE DELL'ORSO with public transport

First of all you need to get to Lecce railway station. Lecce is at the end of the main Adriatic line and is therefore well connected.

There are numerous Eurostar trains from the main cities in the north (Milan, Bologna) and the centre/south (Rome, Naples; although you may have to change in Bari). Unfortunately Eurostar trains are pretty expensive (although probably still less than the rest of Western Europe).

An alternative would be to take an Intercity Night train which is much cheaper or take one of the few Intercity day trains to Bari and then change

For those arriving in Bari or Brindisi via plane or ferry there is also a regional/express service which is even cheaper. To give you an idea of times: from Bari to Lecce the Eurostar takes approximately 1hour 30minutes while the regional or express train takes just over 2 hours.

From Brindisi it takes 25 minutes with the Eurostar and 40 minutes with the regional train.

For exact times and prices you can go to the Italian State Railway's timetable online at: http://www.trenitalia.it

The website is in Italian, English, French and German. Remember to put in the exact date you wish to travel - especially those arriving Sunday - because you might find yourselves waiting in Brindisi or, worse, Milan for many hours!!

From Lecce railway station the best way to get to Frassanito is by bus. There is a direct public bus service from the station which stops outside the campsite. This is the "Linea Rossa" (Red Line) Lecce - Otranto - Torre Dell'Orso
